Kaito Kuroba (黒羽 快斗 Kuroba Kaito?)

Kaito Kuroba (黒羽 快斗 Kuroba Kaito^?), the true identity under his alias Phantom Thief Kid (怪盗キッド Kaito Kido^?) is a fictional character created by Gosho Aoyama. His father Toichi Kuroba (黒羽 盗一 Kuroba Tōichi^?) was the original Phantom Thief Kid and was killed when he refused to steal the Pandora Jewel for an unknown organization. Kaito Kuroba then takes on the role of Phantom Thief Kid after learning the truth about his father in order to search for the Pandora Jewel and prevent it from reaching the hands of the organization. Kaito Kuroba is the protagonist of the Magic Kaitomanga series and has made significant appearances in Detective Conan, often as an opponent to Shinichi Kudo who tries to solve Kaito's trickery and stop him from succeeding in his theft. He has an uncanny resemblance to Shinichi, as shown when Shinichi's childhood friend Ran mistook Kaito for him. The only noticeable differences between their physical appearance being their haircuts.

Kaito Kuroba's father Toichi Kuroba was the first Phantom Thief 1412, is a world-renowned thief who steals treasure and jewels. He was referred to as Phantom Thief Kid, when a journalist hastily scrawled "1412" and Booker Kudo read it as "KID."^[1]. After finding out the cause of his father's death, Kaito takes on the role as Phantom Thief Kid in order to find the Pandora Jewel and stop the organization from obtaining it. The only clue to finding it, is that it is a Jewel that turns red when shone in the full moon's moonlight, revealing a smaller gem inside of the larger one. During a certain comet, it will shed a tear, and if that tear is drank, it shall grant immortality.

Kaito is very intelligent, and loves pulling harmless pranks on people, often involving magic. After learning about his father's alter ego, Kaito picks up where his father left off and assumes his identity in order to investigate his mysterious death. He finds out that his father was in fact murdered by a mysterious crime syndicate for interfering with them while they searched for the Pandora gem. He then vows to find it before they do and destroy it, denying the possibility of immortality to his father's murderers. In addition, he tries to lure them out with his incredibly publicized and flamboyant heists. He even goes to such lengths as to announce the time and place of his heists in the form of riddles. Kaito fears of his secret identity becoming public knowledge and has ichthyophobia.

Kaito's skills, and intelligence prevent him from getting caught. He is also very skilled at performing magic tricks and illusions. Kaito is also known for his acrobatic and daredevil-like antics. Kaito can also imitate practically any voice without the aid of a special device. His costumes and disguises are top notch as well. Kaito can even make someone believe he is their husband, son, or family member.^[2]

Kaitou Kid uses a number of gadgets to help with his thievery. Most notable are the sharp, thin metal playing cards shot by a card gun, a cape that can unfold into a hang glider, pink smoke bombs, and blow-up mannequins of himself which act as decoys to distract the inspector. He also has an assistant who had previously worked for his father, an old man named Jii Konosuke. Kaito's classmate Akako Koizumi and Kaito's mother know of his identity as Kid.

Throughout the anime and manga of Case Closed, sometimes as a cameo appearance or an opponent Shinichi Kudo tries to capture.

Eva Kadan known in Japan as Eri Kisaki (妃 英里 Kisaki Eri?)

Eva Kadan known in Japan as Eri Kisaki (妃 英里 Kisaki Eri^?) is a fictional character of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Conan). Eva is very intelligent and quick on the uptake; as an experienced lawyer, she has been known to be able to solve criminal cases, occasionally with the help of Conan. She may also suspect that there is more behind Conan than meets the eye; however, she has come to trust his mystery-solving capabilities and vouches for him. The name "Eri Kisaki" came from the mystery writer/detective Ellery Queen. Kisaki means "queen" in Japanese.

Eva was a childhood friend and wife of Richard Moore, and the mother of Rachel Moore. She is also a childhood friend of Vivian Kudo.

It is stated that Eva and Richard have known each other since elementary school, but they mostly argued. Their fellow classmates were quite amused at their fierce bickering during a home economics class over the choice of which sauce should be put on an omelet (Eva favoring the traditional Western seasonings while Richard insisted on Japanese soy sauce). Despite their adamant disagreement, they ended up eating in exactly the same manner.

Ten years^[2] prior to the series, she had been taken hostage by a man whom Richard, who was at that time a police officer, had arrested at the police station. The man had escaped the questioning room, grabbed her and held her at gunpoint. Being an expert marksman, Richard shot at her so that the bullet would only graze her leg. Due to this, she fell out of the way, allowing them to take the man back into custody. Despite this, Richard's superiors believed he had been reckless and didn't care about her safety. He was thus forced to leave the police force.

Rachel originally thought that her mother left him since he had shot her, but Eva later reveals that she had known all along why he had shot her and was proud of him for saving her life. Apparently the real reason that she left him was because Richard criticized her cooking, which was quite terrible to begin with. However, she still shows affection for Richard, and she would return to him if only he would stop his perverted attitude when he is around other attractive women.^{[citation needed]}

It was also revealed that she once competed with Vivian Kudo in a pageant that had taken place in Teitan High.^[3] Apparently, both of them won in a draw,^[4] due to Richard's ticket not being placed in. He voted for Eva because, being poor at English as a teenager, he thought "Miss Teitan High" stood for "Mistake" and stated that he would have voted for Vivian.^[5]

Eva is seen driving a classic Mini Cooper (an LHD one, which is odd for Japan, an RHD county, especially since most Minis built were RHD, even those sold in LHD countries like the United States). She refers to it as her car but it is in fact a rental.

Aside from helping Conan solve cases, the anime has adapted her into a few original courtroom battle episodes in which her profession is put into motion. In each battle, her rival is top public prosecutor named Reiko Kujo (九条 玲子 Kujo Reiko^?), whose nickname was "Madonna of the prosecutors".^[6]

She has a secretary named Midori Kuriyama (栗山 綠 Kuriyama Midori^?).

Vivian Kudo also known as Yukiko Kudo (工藤 有希子 Kudō Yukiko?)

Vivian Kudo also known as Yukiko Kudo (工藤 有希子 Kudō Yukiko^?) Japan, is a fictional character of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Conan).

Vivian Kudo is married to Booker Kudo, and is the mother of Jimmy Kudo. She had become a famous actress and idol at a very young age, but abandoned her promising career in order to marry her husband. This caused an uproar within her family at the time, since she had been only 20 years old. After having Jimmy, she and her husband traveled to America to pursue their own careers after he had grown old enough to care for himself.

Vivian is also an old friend of Rachel Moore's mother Eva Kadan from high school, and both had competed in a pageant which had taken place in their school. Despite still being friends, they keep up a friendly competition in those regards, since the contest had ended in a tie^[3] because Kogoro had failed to turn in his vote.^[4]

Vivian had also studied for an acting role with her friend, Sharon Vineyard (who unbeknown to her, was Vermouth) under the world-famous stage magician, Toichi Kuroba.^[5] One of the things he taught them was the art of disguise, and they both become masters of the art and use their disguising skills throughout the series. They did not know that Toichi Kuroba was secretly the original Kaitou Kid, who was later murdered by the Black Organization, and whose identity was later discovered and taken up by his own son, Kuroba Kaito in order to find his father's murderers. Vivian had met Kaito before, when he was ten years old.^{[citation needed]}

She also drive a Jaguar E-Type as shown in 'The Golden Apple' case serial set in New York. Her reckless driving had landed it in the body shop and it had recently gotten out.

Yukiko's personality is more that of a wild, over-confident teenager than of a mature woman; she is impulsive, a reckless driver (caught back in New York because of it), and likes to stand in the limelight (literally) whenever she has the chance. Because of her marriage to a famous mystery author and her knack for becoming involved in criminal cases from time to time, she has been publicly dubbed the "Night Baroness",^[1] after one of her husband's more notorious characters, the Night Baron.

A running gag in the series is that whenever Yukiko meets her son and they have to pretend not to know each other, in the original Japanese versions Jimmy calls her "oba-san". This term, which means "old lady" or "grandmother", is often used by small children for women in their thirties and forties, sometimes even younger ones - a rather discomforting thought for those Japanese women who consider themselves in the prime of their lives. Yukiko also reacts rather unfavorably to it, as she is "only" 37 years old, so Conan has to correct himself by calling her "onēe-san" ("older sister").

In episode 43, Vivian makes her first appearance in the series. In the episode, the couple had returned from America to discover that their son had gone missing. Dr. Hiroshi Agasa feels inclined to tell them about what had happened to Jimmy, and the danger that he is in. They are extremely worried about him and want him to go live with them in America. They do this by staging a mock "kidnapping" of one Conan Edogawa and create a case for him to solve, while scaring him half to death at the same time.

Vivian disguises herself as Conan's supposed mother, "Fanny Edogawa" and shows up at the Moore Detective Agency to pick him up. Conan immediately knows something is wrong since Conan was an alias that he made up, and fears her to be part of the Black Organization. In the end, she and her husband reveal themselves to him, and plead with him to stay with them in America. Conan rejects the idea, because he feels that he needs to bring down the Black Organization and keep the Professor, Rachel, and her family safe at the same time. Thus, Vivian takes him back to Rachel Moore's (Ran Mori) place while disguised as Fanny. She and her husband then return to America, but check in on him from time to time.

Later, in episode 96, Vivian returns to Japan to find that Rachel is highly suspicious of Conan being Jimmy. Vivian pretends that she didn't know that Conan is Jimmy to lure Rachel away, and convinces her that Conan is a very distant relative of both herself and the professor. Later in the episode, Vivian takes Conan to her friend's house, where yet another mystery has to be solved.

Vivian also makes another appearance in episodes 144 and 145, North Star #3 Express Leaving Ueno.

In the film Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street, Vivian is mentioned as having been at a family reunion during the course of the film. However, she appears later on, as the VR game's version of Irene Adler. Conan realises this is his father's work, comparing her to Irene Adler because Booker is comparing himself to Sherlock Holmes.

Booker Kudo, also known as Yusaku Kudo (工藤 優作 Kudō Yūsaku?)

Booker Kudo, also known as Yusaku Kudo (工藤 優作 Kudō Yūsaku^?) in Japan, is a fictional character of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Conan). Booker Kudo is a famousmystery novelist married to Vivian Kudo. The two have one son, Jimmy Kudo.^[1] His original Japanese name Yusaku Kudo refers to actor Yusaku Matsuda and Shunsaku Kudo, the detective played by Matsuda.^{[citation needed]}

Booker's novels are known worldwide often starring the Night Baron; Knight Baron in the dubbed animation, a fictional villain in his stories.^[2] Twenty years prior to the start of the series, he helped Inspector Meguire solve many cases,^[3] much as his son now.^[4] However, Booker never sees himself as anything but a writer. Because of his fame, he and Vivian move to Los Angeles one year before the story begins, leaving their Jimmy at fourteen years behind for school.As his son can be compared to Sherlock Holmes he would be compared to Sherlock's older brother Mycroft. As he is a better detective but chooses not to be one.

When Jimmy was still in the first grade, he and the previous Phantom Thief 1412, used to be rivals.^[5] He created the name Phantom Thief Kid when he read 1412, as KID, making him technically a parent of Phantom Thief Kid figuratively.^[6]. It was hinted that he may have known Toichi Kuroba was the Phantom Thief Kid he was facing.^[7].

When Jimmy became Conan, he neglected to call them for many months causing them to worry about him. They return to Japan where Agasa tells them about Jimmy's poisoning and his double life as Conan. In an attempt to convince Conan that he should join his parents in Los Angeles, Booker disguises himself the Night Baron and Vivian disguises herself as Fanny Edogawa, pretending to be Conan's actual mother. With Dr. Agasa's help, they stage a kidnapping in an attempt to prove to Jimmy that he can not handle the organization he is facing himself, as he has failed against the fake kidnapping.

In episode 96, Booker appears once again, this time in an attempt to sharpen Conan's skills, although the fact that Booker is the mysterious man is not revealed until the end. It turns out that he had also come to win Vivian's forgiveness for some unknown offense and to take her back home with him.

He also makes a short appearance in episode 145 to save his wife in time from being pushed in front of a bullet train by a murderer.

He also players a major role in the Sixth Movie such as designing a Sherlock Holmes virtual video game of London.

Richard Moore known as Kogorou Mouri (毛利 小五郎 Mōri Kogorō?)

Richard Moore known as Kogorou Mouri (毛利 小五郎 Mōri Kogorō^?) in Japan is one of the protagonists of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Conan). The name "Kogoro Mori" came from two mystery-related sources. "Kogoro" came from "Kogoro Akechi", the detective created by Edogawa Rampo, while Mori came fromMaurice Leblanc.

Richard is a private investigator^[1], but he prefers to laze around all day. Richard can easily become infatuated with beautiful women. His dream woman is pop idol Yoko Okino,^[2] and he never misses her television show.^[3] Because of his behavior around attractive women, he often embarrasses his daughter Rachel Moore and while it is not the reason why Richard's wife left him, it is why she hasn't come back.

While he is never outright called an alcoholic, Richard has a tendency to get intoxicated at social events, and Jimmy/Conan makes sarcastic remarks about him spending money on alcohol. In the anime, his office is littered with empty beer cans^[4], and he keeps a well-stocked liquor shelf.

In college, Richard was the ace of the Judo team, however, he was highly vulnerable to stage fright.^[5] He is also a brilliant marksman.^[6]

Richard's daughter, Rachel Moore, is also the daughter of Eva Kadan, who is now living separately after an argument ten years prior.^[6] Despite constantly feigning disinterest in her, Richard still has feelings for his wife—he has even asked her to move back in with him, but she pretends not to hear him because she is not "ready" yet,^[7] though she still has feelings for him as well. These are expressed through jealousy when he comments on other girls' looks.

In the Japanese version due to his name being Kogoro Mori he is often mistaken for the famous astronaut Mamoru Mohri when he introduces himself, because they both are in the news frequently, of Japanese decent, and have the same last name. In the English version when Richard introduces himself he is often mistaken for "oh, that famous astronaut," as well. In the English version it is possible he is also confused with Patrick Moore.

In the US version, Richard Moore says that he is forty-three, in opposed to being thirty-seven in the Japanese version. It is unknown if Eva's age remains was altered as well since the characters attented school together. It is thought that the age change would effect the Princess Pageant storyline that occurred twenty years before the series began because if her age was altered she would be in her twenties and not a teenager as she was in the Japanese version.

Throughout most of the series, he is seen as a pretty incompetent detective, often missing obvious clues and jumping to the wrong conclusions, though several of these conclusions were shared by other people on the scene. However, Richard does follow the proper police procedures, asks questions, and (with a little help from Conan) follows leads quite well. Despite his ineptness, he had been a prominent police officer under Inspector Joseph Megure ten years prior to the start of the series^[8] He is shown to have left the police force after events addressed in the second movie, Case Closed: The Fourteenth Target.

Thanks to Conan's undercover help in solving numerous cases, Richard reputation as a detective grows quickly.^[9] He hardly remembers the solutions of any cases because Conan knocks him out with tranquillizer darts so that he can announce the solution to the case while hidden, using a device that allows him to imitate Richard's voice as a proxy. However, Richard never seems to wonder about this fact and often boasts about his merits.

In later stories, there are times when Richard is actually able to solve crime cases with little to no help from Conan, especially when people he knows or cares about are involved. (It appears that, while he can connect the dots just fine, he can't actually find them as quickly as Conan does.) The most notable of these events takes place during a trip to a hot spring, where one of his old college friends is murdered. Richard is actually so disturbed and determined to find the killer on his own that Conan cannot bring himself to drug him, limiting himself to surreptitiously drawing attention to the necessary clues.^[10] Despite his frequent moronic analyses, Richard is actually pretty smart when he applies himself. He is even able to completely solve a crime himself in the ninth movie, Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths, and Conan applauds him mentally for it.

Rachel Moore, also known as Ran Mouri (毛利 蘭 Mōri Ran?)

Rachel Moore, known as Ran Mouri (毛利 蘭 Mōri Ran^?) in Japan, is the 2nd protagonist of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Konan). Her Japanese name derives from Maurice Leblanc (From Mourisu Ruburan, according to Aoyama).

Rachel is a childhood friend of Jimmy Kudo. She is the daughter of private detective Richard Moore and Eva Kadan, a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven^[1], and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together.

Rachel is the captain of the karate team of Teitan High School^[2] and therefore is very powerful as demonstrated when she won her Regional Championship^[3]. However, she gets easily frightened by the idea of ghosts or monsters because karate won't work on them. Besides that, she is also very lucky in gambling.

After Jimmy's disappearance, she meets Edogawa Conan along with Professor Agasa, who introduces him as a distant "relative" and asks if she wouldn't mind taking care of him at her house. She and her father practically adopt him, as Richard believes he is a good luck charm for helping him solve cases ^[4]. Rachel immediately comes to think of him as a surrogate little brother, without realizing that Conan is actually Jimmy. She also feels that Jimmy was very important to her.

In time, Rachel comes to suspect that Conan is actually Jimmy despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and "prove" her wrong. This happens many times, and in one particular instance, she was so sure that her reasoning was correct until Jimmy (temporarily restored to his true age) appears at the same time as Conan (who was really Ai Haibara in disguise). Still, there seems to be a latent conviction remaining that Conan could indeed be Jimmy; this is hinted at by her increasingly trusting behaviour towards Conan throughout the series. Yet, mostly because of Sonoko's taunting, she also fantasies that Jimmy is with a brown/blond or strawberry blond-haired woman all the time - which is true to some extent, with the appearance of Ai Haibara in the series (though no romantic attraction is lost from Jimmy's side, as she occasionally imagines).Rachel is deeply in love with Jimmy and their feelings develop throughout the story.

Her greatest personality trait is that she is kind and genuinely cares for those she loves. She is described as being strong-willed and stubborn yet gentle. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble with her karate skills on occasion.

It is revealed in book 8 that she can play the piano well.(However, She just played Moonlight Sonata.) In addition, she appreciates fine art, is very good at cooking and household chores (unlike her mother), and looks after both Conan and her father. Mostly unbeknown to herself, she is sometimes popular with boys, making Sonoko jealous of her at some point.(But it is not sure because Sonoko might feel that.)

In chapters 350–354 of the manga and episode 286-288 of the anime, it is revealed that she and Jimmy had gone to the United States, New York at some point in the past to visit Jimmy's parents in New York. They meet his mother, and her actress friend, Sharon Vineyard, who is later learned to be Chris Vineyard in disguise, known as Vermouth in the Black Organization. Later that evening, Vermouth disguises as a serial killer to do work for the organization and is saved by Rachel and Jimmy who encounter her on their way back from a show. She had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Rachel caught her arm and Jimmy helped her pull her to safety despite Vermouth's guise of a wanted serial killer that the FBI were apparently pursuing in the area. Due to this, she gives Rachel the nickname "Angel", and Jimmy the nickname "Cool Guy". Later in the anime/manga, Vermouth shows hesitance to kill Rachel and later Conan as well,^[5] but whether or not it is because of any emotional attachment is unclear.
