Richard Moore known as Kogorou Mouri (毛利 小五郎 Mōri Kogorō?)

Richard Moore known as Kogorou Mouri (毛利 小五郎 Mōri Kogorō^?) in Japan is one of the protagonists of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Conan). The name "Kogoro Mori" came from two mystery-related sources. "Kogoro" came from "Kogoro Akechi", the detective created by Edogawa Rampo, while Mori came fromMaurice Leblanc.

Richard is a private investigator^[1], but he prefers to laze around all day. Richard can easily become infatuated with beautiful women. His dream woman is pop idol Yoko Okino,^[2] and he never misses her television show.^[3] Because of his behavior around attractive women, he often embarrasses his daughter Rachel Moore and while it is not the reason why Richard's wife left him, it is why she hasn't come back.

While he is never outright called an alcoholic, Richard has a tendency to get intoxicated at social events, and Jimmy/Conan makes sarcastic remarks about him spending money on alcohol. In the anime, his office is littered with empty beer cans^[4], and he keeps a well-stocked liquor shelf.

In college, Richard was the ace of the Judo team, however, he was highly vulnerable to stage fright.^[5] He is also a brilliant marksman.^[6]

Richard's daughter, Rachel Moore, is also the daughter of Eva Kadan, who is now living separately after an argument ten years prior.^[6] Despite constantly feigning disinterest in her, Richard still has feelings for his wife—he has even asked her to move back in with him, but she pretends not to hear him because she is not "ready" yet,^[7] though she still has feelings for him as well. These are expressed through jealousy when he comments on other girls' looks.

In the Japanese version due to his name being Kogoro Mori he is often mistaken for the famous astronaut Mamoru Mohri when he introduces himself, because they both are in the news frequently, of Japanese decent, and have the same last name. In the English version when Richard introduces himself he is often mistaken for "oh, that famous astronaut," as well. In the English version it is possible he is also confused with Patrick Moore.

In the US version, Richard Moore says that he is forty-three, in opposed to being thirty-seven in the Japanese version. It is unknown if Eva's age remains was altered as well since the characters attented school together. It is thought that the age change would effect the Princess Pageant storyline that occurred twenty years before the series began because if her age was altered she would be in her twenties and not a teenager as she was in the Japanese version.

Throughout most of the series, he is seen as a pretty incompetent detective, often missing obvious clues and jumping to the wrong conclusions, though several of these conclusions were shared by other people on the scene. However, Richard does follow the proper police procedures, asks questions, and (with a little help from Conan) follows leads quite well. Despite his ineptness, he had been a prominent police officer under Inspector Joseph Megure ten years prior to the start of the series^[8] He is shown to have left the police force after events addressed in the second movie, Case Closed: The Fourteenth Target.

Thanks to Conan's undercover help in solving numerous cases, Richard reputation as a detective grows quickly.^[9] He hardly remembers the solutions of any cases because Conan knocks him out with tranquillizer darts so that he can announce the solution to the case while hidden, using a device that allows him to imitate Richard's voice as a proxy. However, Richard never seems to wonder about this fact and often boasts about his merits.

In later stories, there are times when Richard is actually able to solve crime cases with little to no help from Conan, especially when people he knows or cares about are involved. (It appears that, while he can connect the dots just fine, he can't actually find them as quickly as Conan does.) The most notable of these events takes place during a trip to a hot spring, where one of his old college friends is murdered. Richard is actually so disturbed and determined to find the killer on his own that Conan cannot bring himself to drug him, limiting himself to surreptitiously drawing attention to the necessary clues.^[10] Despite his frequent moronic analyses, Richard is actually pretty smart when he applies himself. He is even able to completely solve a crime himself in the ninth movie, Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths, and Conan applauds him mentally for it.

Rachel Moore, also known as Ran Mouri (毛利 蘭 Mōri Ran?)

Rachel Moore, known as Ran Mouri (毛利 蘭 Mōri Ran^?) in Japan, is the 2nd protagonist of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン Meitantei Konan). Her Japanese name derives from Maurice Leblanc (From Mourisu Ruburan, according to Aoyama).

Rachel is a childhood friend of Jimmy Kudo. She is the daughter of private detective Richard Moore and Eva Kadan, a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven^[1], and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together.

Rachel is the captain of the karate team of Teitan High School^[2] and therefore is very powerful as demonstrated when she won her Regional Championship^[3]. However, she gets easily frightened by the idea of ghosts or monsters because karate won't work on them. Besides that, she is also very lucky in gambling.

After Jimmy's disappearance, she meets Edogawa Conan along with Professor Agasa, who introduces him as a distant "relative" and asks if she wouldn't mind taking care of him at her house. She and her father practically adopt him, as Richard believes he is a good luck charm for helping him solve cases ^[4]. Rachel immediately comes to think of him as a surrogate little brother, without realizing that Conan is actually Jimmy. She also feels that Jimmy was very important to her.

In time, Rachel comes to suspect that Conan is actually Jimmy despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and "prove" her wrong. This happens many times, and in one particular instance, she was so sure that her reasoning was correct until Jimmy (temporarily restored to his true age) appears at the same time as Conan (who was really Ai Haibara in disguise). Still, there seems to be a latent conviction remaining that Conan could indeed be Jimmy; this is hinted at by her increasingly trusting behaviour towards Conan throughout the series. Yet, mostly because of Sonoko's taunting, she also fantasies that Jimmy is with a brown/blond or strawberry blond-haired woman all the time - which is true to some extent, with the appearance of Ai Haibara in the series (though no romantic attraction is lost from Jimmy's side, as she occasionally imagines).Rachel is deeply in love with Jimmy and their feelings develop throughout the story.

Her greatest personality trait is that she is kind and genuinely cares for those she loves. She is described as being strong-willed and stubborn yet gentle. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble with her karate skills on occasion.

It is revealed in book 8 that she can play the piano well.(However, She just played Moonlight Sonata.) In addition, she appreciates fine art, is very good at cooking and household chores (unlike her mother), and looks after both Conan and her father. Mostly unbeknown to herself, she is sometimes popular with boys, making Sonoko jealous of her at some point.(But it is not sure because Sonoko might feel that.)

In chapters 350–354 of the manga and episode 286-288 of the anime, it is revealed that she and Jimmy had gone to the United States, New York at some point in the past to visit Jimmy's parents in New York. They meet his mother, and her actress friend, Sharon Vineyard, who is later learned to be Chris Vineyard in disguise, known as Vermouth in the Black Organization. Later that evening, Vermouth disguises as a serial killer to do work for the organization and is saved by Rachel and Jimmy who encounter her on their way back from a show. She had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Rachel caught her arm and Jimmy helped her pull her to safety despite Vermouth's guise of a wanted serial killer that the FBI were apparently pursuing in the area. Due to this, she gives Rachel the nickname "Angel", and Jimmy the nickname "Cool Guy". Later in the anime/manga, Vermouth shows hesitance to kill Rachel and later Conan as well,^[5] but whether or not it is because of any emotional attachment is unclear.

Jimmy Kudo ( 工藤 新一, Kudō Shinichi )

Jimmy Kudo, also known as Shinichi Kudo (工藤 新一, Kudō Shinichi?) in Japan, is the protagonist of the anime and manga Case Closed, known in Japan as Detective Conan (名探偵コナン, Meitantei Conan?). He later takes on the alias Conan Edogawa (江戸川 コナン, Edogawa Conan?) after Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo.[1] Jimmy Kudo was a well known High School Detective who helped solved cases which the police could not. One day, he investigates a suspicious man. Later he is attacked and forced to swallow a a poison called the APTX 4869 which turns him back into a child. Now he lives with his friend and love Rachel Moore as Conan Edogawa who helps her father Richard solve cases, hoping that they will run into a case involving the strange men from the Black Organization who forced him to take the poison.

At the beginning of the series, Jimmy is a 17-year-old student at Teitan High School. He was already well-known as a brilliant young detective who closed many difficult cases that the professionals could not, and known as the savior of the police force[2]. Jimmy was born to Booker Kudo, a mystery writer and Vivian Kudo a former movie star.[3]. He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age, was very intuitive and observant. Due to the influence of his father, and the generally laissez-faire environment at home, he has long been an incessant and persistent reader, especially of mystery novels.[4] Booker started taking Jimmy to crime scenes since sixth grade which inspired him to be a Detective.[5].Besides for Jimmy's intelligence, Jimmy is an extremely skilled soccer player. At first, it was to hone his reflexes but he grew fond of the sport.[6][7] Jimmy is also known for his inability to sing, but was revealed to have perfect pitch. [8][9] He is also a skilled violinst, taking after his idol Sherlock Holmes. He apparently can speak English, as he once conversed with and translated for an American diplomat.[10]

Jimmy is a good friend to Rachel Moore whom he has known since kindergarten.[4][11] Jimmy has not found any interest in other girls.[12]. After changing into Conan, Jimmy sometimes calls her over the telephone and imitates his normal voice with the voice-changing bowtie, so that she is not worried about him.[13]. He convinces her that he is off solving a very difficult case and will return once the investigation concludes.[13] Jimmy/Conan is not without sexual fantasies regarding Rachel; the most obvious example being his getting nosebleeds or blushing--manga shorthand for lust-- when he sees her in a bathing suit, or when Rachel pulled him into an onsen with her. Jimmy is actually in love with Rachel but he's not good at expressing his feelings towards her.[14]

Jimmy also has a strong sense of justice as he constantly tries to arrest the Black Organization as well as blaming himself when a murder occurs before him. His sense of justice can however sometimes cause him to be sceptical as he was initially with Anita Hailey.

Case Closed ( 名探偵 コナン?, Detective Conan )

Case Closed, also known as Meitantei Conan (名探偵 コナン?, Detective Conan), is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama and is serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 1994. The name "Case Closed" for the English language release results from "unspecified legal considerations" of the name Detective Conan.[1] The story follows the adventures of Jimmy Kudo, a prodigious young detective who was inadvertently transformed into a child due to a poison.
Jimmy Kudo, a gifted 17-year-old high school detective who frequently works with the police, is attacked by two members of a mysterious crime syndicate while investigating a case of blackmail. He was drugged with a newly-developed drug that is supposed to kill him, but due to a rare side effect unknown to the two men, the drug transformed his body into that of a seven-year-old instead. In order to hide his identity and investigate the whereabouts of the syndicate, called the Black Organization, he adopts the pseudonym Conan Edogawa. To search for leads to the syndicate, he moves in with his childhood friend Rachel Moore whose father Richard Moore is a private investigator. He also enrolls into Teitan elementary school and forms the Junior Detective League with three elementary school friends, Amy, Mitch and George. Even as Conan, Jimmy continues solving criminal cases, posing as Richard Moore with the help of special gadgets. Richard Moore, a rather inept detective, is bewildered at the sudden rise in his case-solving abilities, but does not question as he is more than glad about his subsequent rise in fame.
